Gionee K6

Among the Chinese smartphone manufacturers doing business in India, there may not be another that has as fancy a backstory as Gionee does. The brand was among the earliest Chinese players in India’s mobile phone industry and the brand had its share of the pie and was reasonably well known. But the brand simply could not keep up with the onslaught of players like Oppo and Vivo and eventually went under the radar a bit. The next big news regarding the brand was when its founder and CEO lost US$144 million in a casino bet and that crushed Gionee because he had been embezzling funds. The brand was eventually acquired in 2018 by Jaina group, which also operated Karbonn Mobiles as well as runs a partnership with Japanese brand Sansui. So what have the new owners managed to do with the smartphone brand? Not much, by the looks of the new Gionee K6 that made its debut recently. The phone features a 6.2 inch IPS LCD display with an HD+ resolution of 720 x 1560 pixels. The phone packs a Helio P60 chipset, so you can expect pretty decent chipset performance. The phone packs 6GB of RAM with 128GB of onboard memory, so you’re good to go on the memory specs as well. Where the phone falters is its operating system, because it ships with Android 7.1, which was called Nougat, in case some of you forgot. The Gionee K6 features a triple camera rig on the back with a 16MP primary sensor and two 2MP sensors, presumably. There is a 13MP shooter embedded in the water drop notch on the front for your selfies and video calls. The battery life is decent thanks to the 4350mah cell inside the Gionee K6. Some of the popular Gionee mobile phones include the Gionee F205 Pro, Gionee S11s, and the Gionee M7 Power.

Gionee K6: Pros & Cons

MSP SCORE
  • Good Stuff
  • Decently powerful processor
  • Bad Stuff
  • Ships with outdated, Android 7.1 OS
  • HD+ resolution of the display is inadequate
  • Two 2MP cameras at the rear have no true purpose
  • Still uses microUSB port
Verdict
Gionee has tried to re-enter the smartphone market with the launch of the K6 but the brand has failed utterly in this attempt. If a smartphone company wants to come back to the market, it should launch a phone that beats all the other phones in the segment, and not a phone that is worst among all, just like the K6 is. The biggest drawback of the device is that it comes with the 3-year old Android 7.1 OS, which sounds ancient now. Secondly, the phone has outdated camera hardware. Third, it has the old, microUSB port instead of the Type-C port that we see in smartphones nowadays. There are a lot of other drawbacks of the device but we think you get the gist from what we ve said above. There are much better smartphones available in the market for the same price as K6.

Gionee K6 Details

6.2 inch LCD HD+ Display, Water Drop Notch
You get only HD+ resolution on the Gionee K6’s LCD display. The resolution of 720 x 1560 pixels is at an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The 6.2-inch screen has a pixel density of 277 ppi. There is a water drop notch for the front camera.
Helio P60, 6GB RAM, Android 7.1 Nougat
The Gionee K6 sports a strange triple sensor setup with a 16MP sensor but it is not clear what the specs of the other two sensors are. You get a 13Mp sensor on the front for selfies and 1080p video recording, which the rear setup can manage as well. The Gionee K6 is equipped with an octa-core Helio P60 SoC, which, at this price point, is quite good. You also get 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Unfortunately this is not complemented by the phone OS, which is Android Nougat 7.1, which quite frankly, is too outdated for 2020.
4350mAh Battery, 10W Charging, Connectivity
The 4350mAh battery is good enough to last you a day when fully charged. The battery only supports 10W charging which means it could take a while to get to full capacity. There is a fingerprint sensor present on the back of the Gionee K6. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and A-GPS. You get a micro USB 2.0 port for charging and the phone packs a 3.5mm headphone jack as well.
